Alfred Kerling, a German-Rumanian, religion teacher in various schools
in Rome and an Oblate scholastic for five years, has just successfully defended
his licentiate thesis at the Roman University of the Holy Cross; his specialty
is Church History. The title of his study is: “The missionary activity of His
Excellency, Bishop Ovid Charlebois, OMI, among the natives of Canada.”
In his well-documented 150 pages, he focuses on the work that not only Bishop Charlebois but also the first Oblates developed in Canada. Of particular interest is the chapter which treats of the “Oblate missionary method” in that time and place.
The moderator of this thesis is encouraging him to develop it further as a doctoral thesis on the same theme. He told him that it would be ideal to do it in Canada, at St. Paul University. That is a cherished dream for Alfred. The General Postulation, who made our archive available to him, is grateful for this valuable contribution which will provide a greater understanding of this Servant of God. For those who are interested, we have some copies at the Postulation Office. (Joaquín MARTÍNEZ, General Postulator)
